iPage is a hosting company that specializes in shared hosting, but also offers VPS and dedicated hosting plans. Their shared hosting plan is one of the cheapest on the market as well. After a major brand relaunch in 2009, the company has shot upward in the rankings to become one of the top hosting sites.
In our iPage review today we’ll look at how this company that hosts over half a million domains functions and what features/plans they offer. We’ll also take a look at my personal experience with the brand and their hosting plans, and finally check out what other people are saying about the company.
Here are some facts to know:

iPage Hosting Review Overview
The domain for iPage has been around for over ten years, but it wasn’t until October 2009 when the company relaunched that it rose to the top of many people’s lists for a high quality cheap hosting service. All it took was two years to go from zero to hero, so what’s the big deal?
Currently, iPage is owned and operated by the Endurance International Group (EIG), which also owns a lot of other major hosting companies. They have been around for fifteen years and currently host over 2 million domain names across the companies they own.
What makes iPage stand out is how it manages to charge an incredibly low price while still maintaining the features you expect from a higher priced hosting service like 24/7 support across multiple channels, 99% uptime, and unlimited hosting.
After looking at numerous hosting companies, I was shocked to find out that when compared to other companies, iPage was as much as 450% cheaper than the competition! Check out this comparison below:
|Web Hosting Company||Starting Price||Vs. iPage|
|iPage||$1.99 per month||—|
|WebHostingHub||$3.50 per month||76% more|
|Arvixe||$4.00 per month||101% more|
|HostMonster||$4.95 per month||149% more|
|BlueHost||$5.95 per month||198% higher|
|A2 Hosting||$5.99 per month||201% higher|
|IX Web Hosting||$6.95 per month||249% higher|
|GreenGeeks||$6.95 per month||249% higher|
|SiteGround||$7.95 per month||299% higher|
My Experience With iPage
Let’s start with something that is neither good nor bad, but worth discussing for anyone who doesn’t already know about this common issue. When hosting companies use the word “unlimited”, they don’t mean it. If you use over a certain amount of resources that is deemed abnormal, you can be penalized or even have your account suspended.
Check out this quote from the iPage terms of service:
How much disk space and bandwidth will my plan include?
There are no set limits on the disk space or data transfer (bandwidth) that we provide in our hosting plans. We want you to have the resources you need to build a great online presence, and 99.95% of all customers will have more than enough disk space and bandwidth to meet their needs.
That being said, we do require all customers to be fully compliant with our Terms of Service and utilize disk space and bandwidth in the normal operation of a personal or small business website.
While it is rare, we may need to put constraints on accounts that are using resources beyond what would be expected in the normal operation of a personal or small business website.
Typically, customers only run into issues if they use their accounts for storage or file sharing, which is not what our services are intended to support. In accordance with our Terms of Services the disk space and bandwidth you use must be integrated into the normal operation of your website.
What happens if I exceed “normal” usage?
If we have concerns about your account’s bandwidth or disk space utilization, you will receive an email asking you to reduce usage. Generally, we provide customers with a minimum of 48 hours to make adjustments before taking the account offline.
Again, the most common situations involve customers who use their accounts for storage of files—particularly multimedia files—that are not linked off of their websites. It is very rare for a customer who is managing a personal or small business website to exceed normal usage.
In essence, the unlimited hosting isn’t actually unlimited with most companies. I wouldn’t sweat it though, because it takes a lot of usage to actually go over these limits. In short, try not to store large files on your site and use compression software to keep file sizes down if you’re worried at all.
What I Liked About iPage Hosting
While I wouldn’t call iPage the best web hosting company out there, I would say they are the best budget-priced company on the market. The price tag is as low as it gets, and the server performance is right where you need it to be.
The low price isn’t just for shared hosting either. The VPS and dedicated hosting from iPage is also very competitively priced, which means that any level of hosting you need is a great deal from iPage.
The process of getting setup is also streamlined and simple. When I made a purchase, I was able to get everything done and have my hosting set up within minutes. While it’s normal to assume that a low-priced hosting company would have a long and drawn out sign up process, but iPage was remarkably smooth and efficient.
Next up I tested the uptime records over the course of several months. You may see other reviews with outrageous claims, but keep in mind that you’re paying almost nothing for the service, so you can’t expect 5-star results.
Over the course of 30 days, iPage offered me 100% uptime, and longer periods of time only dipped to about 99.93% which still isn’t bad considering the price.
The customer service and money-back guarantee offered by iPage is also a great feature. The company has a full money-back option within 30 days, but customers can also receive a pro-rated refund at any point during their service with iPage’s Anytime Money Back Guarantee.
In terms of their server loading speed, iPage lands between 72 and 27 milliseconds for U.S. servers and 196 milliseconds for London servers. This is a solid result as there are very few other budget hosting companies that can boast these same results.
Finally, my last favorite aspect is the green hosting that iPage provides. According to the website, the company uses renewable energy for all of their data centers. While they don’t provide a ton of details, this initiative is a nice touch.
What I Didn’t Like About iPage Hosting
With many iPage reviews prior to 2016, you’ll notice that the claim the service doesn’t offer anything above shared hosting, but they would be wrong. iPage does in fact offer VPS and dedicated servers (as outlined below) so don’t let those kinds of claims fool you. It’s something new they added.
The only real gripe that I have with iPage is in their multitude of “free trials” that are thrown out at you the moment you sign up for hosting. These are disguised at “marketing services” in the control panel and include a number of attractive options:
- Constant Contact
- Email Brain Small Business
- Free Toll-Free Phone Number
- Y! Sponsored Search Credits
There are plenty more, but the issue is that these things are only free during their respective trial period. Once that time is up, you’ll need to pay. The reason behind this is most likely in the fact that iPage gets a referral fee for anyone who pays for the services.
Many users will activate these trials without thinking of it and forget to cancel. That’s an easy way to get charges on your account that you didn’t want.
- A high-quality cheap hosting option
- High average uptime
- Quick signup and setup
- Eco-friendly hosting
- Persistent offers of unnecessary software
- Trials must be canceled to avoid getting charged
Helpful User Reviews
Now it’s time to hear from the people. These are some customer reviews I received from customers who purchased iPage and were willing to pass along their experience:
“I decide to use iPage for my first website. It was a startup business selling handmade jewelry and I wanted a web host with a good price and a website builder to make the process simpler for me. I signed up for a two-year term with iPage and I was immediately impressed with how simple the sign-up process was.
I had to call the customer service line a few times to help with some things that confused me in the early days, but the Weebly website builder was an amazing tool for building my site. Overall, I’ve been with iPage for about three years now and I would recommend them to any of my friends.”
– Melinda Payne
“I initially passed up iPage when I saw that they didn’t offer VPS or dedicated hosting. I checked again recently and saw that plans had been created for both of these hosting types and needless to say, I was thrilled.
I had been looking for a competitively priced option with scalable choices since my website was growing at a steady pace. I found exactly what I was looking for with iPage!”
– Ken Masterson
“Whether you’re hosting your first website, or you have plenty of experience in the industry of your choosing, I couldn’t recommend iPage hosting more. From the uptime, to the features, to the great prices, I’ve never had a better experience with a hosting company.
A lot of them have elements similar to iPage, but in the end all of them pale in comparison to the comprehensive experience I had here. I’ve been using them for four years and I won’t stop anytime soon.”
– Alex Kline
What iPage Offers (Hosting Plans and Features)
Perhaps the most enticing aspect of iPage hosting is their rock-bottom rate for shared hosting. You’ll notice immediately that this is one of the best initial rates you can find. The company also offers VPS and Dedicated hosting plans.
If you’re unsure which one is right for you, they have a great interactive page that shows the main differences between different types of hosting.
Shared Hosting Plans
Hosting from iPage starts with the iPage Essential Plan which can be purchased for as low as $1.99 per month. This basic plan comes with a number of features and freebies that are sure to catch your eye:
- Unlimited storage
- Scalable bandwidth
- Unlimited domain names
- Unlimited MySQL databases
- Free domain for the first year
Beyond these basic features, the shared hosting plan from iPage offers secure FTP, a FTP manager, a free online store with PayPal integration, easy 1-click installer, and more tools.
You’re given options for WordPress, Weebly, and a mobile optimized website builder. The included templates and themes are also sure to help you find a design that suits you.
With your hosting plan you receive a total of $200 in credit for Google Adwords and Yahoo/Bing. A free Yellowpages.com listing is provied, along with a toll-free phone number for the US.
If you ever run into any issues, the online help center, live chat, email, and phone lines are always open 24/7 if you need to speak with a customer service representative.
The control panel used by iPage is vDeck which is also included with your shared hosting plan. While the storage space is advertised as “unlimited” the truth is that there is a limit if a business or website “exceeds normal usage.”
It’s possible for this to happen if you’re storing too many large files on your website, but according to iPage, most people will not reach this limit.
Another thing to note is that the entry price is something that will go up once the initial contract has ended. You’ll find renewal prices on the website, typically at the bottom of the shared hosting page.
VPS Hosting Solutions
Virtual private server hosting is the next step up from basic shared plans. While iPage didn’t always offer this higher level of hosting, during my research for today’s iPage review 2016, I saw that this is now offered in three plans:
This plan offers 1 core, 1GB of RAM, 40GB of storage, and 1TB of bandwidth. It starts at $19.99 per month for the first term.
This plan offers 2 cores, 4GB of RAM, 90GB of space, and 3TB of bandwidth for $47.99/month during your initial term.
The largest VPS plan offers 4 cores, 8GB of RAM, 120GB of storage, and 4TB of bandwidth for $79.99 per month.
Beyond the increased power, VPS hosting also offers a lot more control over your hosting. While you’re not required to exercise this control, advanced users will enjoy root access to their server settings to tweak their hosting as needed.
With cPanel as the main software for interacting with server settings, most users will feel right at home using VPS hosting from iPage. The cloud-based nature of the servers also offers plenty of room to grow and scale your business as needed.
VPS hosting also comes with these great features:
- Free domain name
- Free marketing credits for Google, Facebook, and Yahoo
- 100% Wind-powered green hosting
- 24/7 support via phone, email, and live chat
- Unlimited domains, subdomains, MySQL Databases, and FTP accounts
Dedicated Hosting Plans
Dedicated hosting provides you with the full power and control of a server. It’s the top of the line hosting option, the cream of the crop as it were. Let’s check out the three major dedicated hosting plans iPage offers:
The startup plan is $119 per month for the first term. It offers a server with 2 cores, 4GB of RAM, 500GB of space, and 5TB of bandwidth.
The second-tier plan is $151 per month and offers 4 cores, 8GB of RAM, 1,000GB of storage, and 10TB of bandwidth.
The highest tier of dedicated hosting offers 4 cores, 16GB of RAM, 1,000GB of storage, and 15TB of bandwidth. It will run you $191.99 per month for the initial term.
These dedicated hosting plans include a number of features as well:
- Full ability to install applications without restriction
- Fully managed support
- cPanel and optional root access
- Faster operating speeds and more resources
- Scalability for additional power as you grow
- Maximum performance as there are no other users on the server
- No overcharges for going over limits.
